Making Snow in Oxford

Making Snow in Oxford

Daily Practice
Journal

No — no snow — yet. But falling temperatures, rain, and winter settling in. In fact, we may get a dusting this weekend.

This scene is from a photo I took last summer of out buildings on a farm near my home. The photo shows goldenrod along the fence posts, bright green grass and tawny fields. I used my imagination to change the ‘season’ of this photo and tried to imagine what it would look like in the coldest part of winter covered in snow.

It amazes me how powerful colors are — looking at this in the glow of bright office light (versus more subdued lighting at my friend’s), the greens and purply blues really make this feel COLD! I painted another snow scene this weekend using different colors – and mercy, it was so much warmer.

I suppose I’ve known this aspect of color and have used it in my paintings before. But it seems snow scenes especially, perhaps with their white starkness, really brought that home to me.

Thank you for your kind comments about both my recent paintings and my computer. You have no idea how much they’ve cheered me during a most frustrating time! More bad news, however on the IT front. The computer keeps crashing – despite all attempts at resuscitation. One more attempt at salvation tonight .. and if that fails .. it’s computer shopping and draining my bank account. SIGH. As Sue has so expertly said earlier, the computer is definitely my workhorse and my ‘connecton’ to family and friends I love and admire, inspiration and learning, and yes, work. So at least I have a day or so to ‘bite the bullet’ and wrap my mind around the possibility.

It’s a busy week here at the office — meetings and classes and planting seeds in a wonderfully warm greenhouse. Some of the plants from last semester’s propagation class are really taking hold, and I saw a beautiful purple iris in bloom …. what a cheer!

Take care today!

Snow

Snow

First dusting of snow this winter. View from the 2nd story of my office building. Nothing glamorous. This is the `back door` entrance where I go to give my eyes a rest from detailed drafting projects. Got to refocus the pupils regularly. :^)

Since I’m on the computer all day, I keep an Internet browser open – sometimes multiple browsers to monitor my favorite web sites. It’s how I keep my days from becoming too monotonous or bogged down from job stress.

Switzerland Holidays can be made wonderful by the ease offered by the travel portals that can arrange each and everything that is to be needed in a travel. More and more information can be gathered by the official Switzerland tourism websites and then there is Internet also meeting all information related needs. Sometimes services offered by such travel portals could be highly customized suitable to the individual needs of the traveler.

Also known for the winter sports, one could enjoy in snow as long he wishes to. People are known to invent more and more winter sports that could be enjoyed in snow apart from the traditional games like skiing.  Skiing has evolved with the help of technological advancements in sports. Heliskiing or Heliboarding is known to be a bit controversial (banned in few places already) but still never stops a visitor who wants to feel a bit of adrenalin rush. Then there are tobogganing and skating. Switzerland is deemed more beautiful as winter descends on it. Thus, people generally wish a getaway in form of Switzerland Holidays in winters especially. Switzerland tourism also seems to be promoting winters of this place rather than this place in itself. One could actually come to a decision on his own after paying one visit to the country.

In addition to this there are certain other top attractions of Switzerland tourism. Emmental cheese or simply Swiss cheese and Swiss Chocolates in food are known to everybody whom food interests more than any other thing. Then there is Swiss national Park, Derborence Mountain Lake, Lake Toma, and Nature Park Chateau-d’Oex with nature at its best. A peep in history and culture of Switzerland could be seen in places like San Gottardo Pass, Convent of St. John (Mustair), Mongo (Mountain Church), Gruyeres (a medieval town) and the list goes long adding certain more picturesque places. So once you plan out a Switzerland holiday, don’t forget to make a list of the places you want to visit else time would seem really less and places too many.

So whatever is the time for your Switzerland holidays are planned, Switzerland tourism is always leaves with more yearnings to return!

Scanning these big negatives is fun—a generous border of clear film around the images means I don’t have to battle my Epson negative holders. Dust specks are smaller.

Something weird is still happening to my uploads, though. Looking at this Flickr page via Firefox 3.6.13, the snow looks totally grayed out compared to how I edited it. I suspect Photoshop Elements is mucking with color profiles in some way I (and practically any normal human) can’t understand.

Attention computer industry: Color management is STILL a broken nightmare. Just make it work already.

Juniper in Soft Focus

Juniper in Soft Focus

Went out in the snow today to take some shots. Wound up at the Sibley Nature Center. This is a shot of some juniper berries on a tree next to the visitor’s center. Used a soft focus on this one, no flash. I thought at first I’d caught some snowflakes in this shot, too, but after wiping off my computer screen… *sigh*

It was just some dust.

The green green grass of home …

The green green grass of home …

An Australian grazing station in the drougth of 2007. What did the sheep eat? I have just found this photograph in a camera that I had apparently forgotten to download to my computer. Best seen in full size, as the photo is rather dark (but it was winter!)
