57/365 Softly worded. Feathers and strands of hair and flecks of dust.

Sunday April 5, 2009 I didn’t feel very creative today. I must go out exploring and take more photos. My macbook and some feathers. A strand of hair or two.

A little magic dust to make things work better

A little magic dust to make things work better

Listening to… – came across DJ Egadz the other day & can’t stop listening to it!

An idea i had a couple of days ago which took a little time to get right – getting the right DOF to get the lights soft enough then getting everything focused without being in the shot myself, then the hardest bit – getting myself in the right place – not a particularly easy task when the camera is 3 meters away – a tiny change in where my hand or face is makes it work or not, & there is noone behind the camera to tell me when i have got it right or am even close lol!.
Just a bit of fun really, but i hope you like it 🙂

Thanks to anyone who comments, faves, notes, adds me as a contact or just plain old looks 🙂 Your time means a lot to me!

Grizzly Bear Chair – Wallpaper

Grizzly Bear Chair - Wallpaper

What has 4 legs, 2 arms, 1 head, 8 inch serrated teeth and is covered in soft fur?

from my website:

The Grizzly Bear Chair!

The Grizzly Bear Chair was given to President Andrew Johnson by California frontiersman Seth Kinman shortly after Lincoln’s death.

Although the chair was “soft and exceedingly comfortable”, “the great feature of the chair was that, by touching a cord, the head of the monster grizzly bear with jaws extended, would dart out in front from under the seat, snapping and gnashing its teeth as natural as life”.

Yes, a giant bear head would come out from under the chair and bite your legs off.

Lincoln still got a Kinman chair before his death. Guess what it was made of? Cute stuffed teddy bears? Milk crates? No. Stabbing, sharpened elk horns.

Kinman presented the chair to Lincoln along with a fiddle “made from the skull and a rib of his favorite mule“. I wonder what happened to mules he didn’t like?

“He played ‘John Brown’ on the bones of the mule. Lincoln said that if he could play the fiddle he would ask him for it, but since he could not, the fiddle would be better off in Mr. Kinman’s hands.” – Stanley Kimmel, a pants pissingly scared bystander.

Kinman was a bit eccentric. Migrating to California in 1849 because of the Gold Rush (who could tell he was a crazy prospector with a clean cut face like that?) he hunted the Grizzly bears in Humbolt county to extinction in the 1860s (large groups of 40 bears roaming together were not unusual prior to that). He claimed a kill count of over 800 Grizzly Bears and over 50 elk a month. Alongside hunting bears, he hunted men. An extremist racist bastard, he would shoot any Indian he met. The author of The Ethics of Grizzly Hunting called him “a mixture of brutality, cunning, and good humor”. The New York Times called him “THE PACIFIC COAST NIMROD WHO GIVES CHAIRS TO PRESIDENTS“.

Today, his great grandsons work for a web hosting company. Truly the American dream. I hope all their servers run off steam power from a furnace that burns bears.

Kinman’s descendants still pray that the undead chair their great grandfather built doesn’t come shambling through the woods some moonless night to drag them to hell…in its exceedingly comfortable seat.

The cards in the picture were sold by Kinsman while he visited Washington.

Dusted off my 50mm 1.8 for this one on the Highline Park.. Don’t use my nifty fifty a whole lot but it was perfect for this shot with it’s wide aperture. This one is best viewed on black.

On and off these days – my computer has become quite liberal and now works when it says it wants to work. But I’m still trying to keep up with everyone’s streams until me and my computer get back on the same page. Hope everyone has a great week!

Day 14/365.

"I have photographs coming in and out left, right and centre from my computer. They’re flying around cyber space, hard drives, discs, cards – the lot! This is a final shot from yesterday’s shoot. The glitter was so beautiful. AJ and Kenny could’ve blown it around all day and I would’ve shot it forever. This was one of the best images of it flying. I love capturing moments like these that the eye wouldn’t otherwise see. [:"

Somewhere a faucet drips.

Somewhere a faucet drips.

Clearly I’m going through a black and white, earthy noir moment. This song plays through my head when I look at this. So does this one for some reason.

I’ve been doing a pretty decent job of staying off the computer, which explains unanswered messages. Sorry for that, but I really need to keep myself offline especially now that college is starting again in a couple of weeks. I’m not feeling that photographic at the moment though…once classes begin I’ll probably be more motivated. I feel really bad about not being able to follow the work of others as much and I hope I can catch up as much as possible when I can! I don’t like missing out on your beautiful photographs even though being off the internet has been really good for my peace of mind.

Yesterday I modeled for the amazing Andrea Pun and I can’t wait to see what she came up with! I got to play fashion model, which was absolutely nerve-wracking since I’m not in the least modelesque, but we had a wonderful stylist and make-up team and though I was nervous it was very fun. Check out one of the shots here!

Monday prettiness

Monday prettiness

I’m back from a week out of town (and away from the computer) and it’s going to take me a while to get back up to speed again. Lots more roses have come into flower while I’ve been away, I need to dust off my camera 🙂
This is one I processed before I went away -soft Flypaper processing.

Bad Things

Bad Things

It took a while to set up for this shot. Last week I collected tons of large, heavy branches while out walking and dragged them home in the rain, only to have them be disposed of by the gardeners. Another week passed before I managed to collect another sufficient batch! And today, what with the overcast weather, I figured I should give a bit of TTV action a go.

Tomorrow I will be off on a plane for a 5 day little trip! I’m bringing my camera(s) and computer along, so I’m thinking there will be much hotel photography fun.
