We’ve heard that these speakers have saved marriages, made people more successful in their professional lives, and so much more. Yet what is positive motivation, and how can it change your own life?

Motivation is a force that can quite simply be either positive or negative. It can be applied to you through others, or you can apply it to the lives of others who are close to you. Positive motivation has the power to give you or your loved ones that little extra push to succeed. It has the power to change lives in incredible ways simply by creating extra will where there really isn’t any will left. If you have ever heard successful people speaking about their lives, you likely have heard many of them talk about a turning point in their lives where they were completely down on their luck and about to give up, but they had that extra bit of will left. It was that final effort that changed their lives.

In so many aspects of life, from playing sports to interpersonal relationships with friends and family to your professional life, positive motivation can not just change your own success but it can change the success of those around  you. When you are a positive force in someone else’s life and are constantly providing strong motivation to continue on even when they think they cannot go any further, you will find that those around you are more successful in their lives. You will also find that they will cheer you on in your life in the same fashion. Motivation is a two-way street, and spreading a little here and there in key places can reap rewards not just for those you love but for you as well.

Parents are typically among the most influential figures in children’s lives, and when you are constantly spreading a “can’t do” message to them, that message is internalized and carried for the rest of their lives. It becomes a mantra of sorts, and it can effect if they sit back and watch life go by or if they jump in and take chances that can lead them on the path to success.

As a parent, positive motivation is among the most important things you can provide to your child. Every parent wants their child to grow up happy and to lead a successful life, and when you shower your child with motivation and solid energy, you will instill a certain “can do” mindset in  your child that will take him or her to incredible heights in life. Consider using motivating words and phrases in key areas of their life from sports games and academics to even their daily tasks like chores and eating all of their green beans. In addition, you will want to make sure that they hear positive and uplifting comments not just spoken to them but spoken to others close to them as well.

Children internalize words and actions, and this is especially true when they come from a trusted and loved source such as their parents. As a parent, it is important that you are a source of positive motivation, as this will be internalized by them and carried through into their adulthood long after you are no longer a daily guiding force in their life. Take the first step today by  making a point to offer encouraging feedback to your child on minor and major tasks and goals, and then follow that up with daily reinforcement going forward.

3. Embrace changes. Today, we are living in a very fast-paced and fast-changing world, those who refuse to embrace changes will be left behind. So, embrace changes and move with them.

4. Step out of your comfort zone. Most people feel comfortable to stay inside their comfort zone even they know that they need to step out if they want to move into the next level. If you want to develop your self motivation, try to step out from your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to test your own ability, give yourself a chance to succeed.

5. Complete the project that you have started. If you have started a project, finish it. Do not do something half way and leave it hanging. Finish whatever that you have started.

6. Stay away from negative people. Have you heard of the term: “Birds of the same feathers flock together”? You see, if you stay with negative people, you will become negative too. So, stay away from these people. Gather with people who have positive mindset and are self motivated.

So the embarrassing situation was some good friends of mine had come to a party, a 40th birthday party it was and they walked in the door and the first few people they met they noticed were hardly even dressed up. So much to their embarrassment they quickly turned around walked out the door, hoped in the car, drove home, which was only a couple of km away and got changed.

Now that’s only ONE choice they could have made, alternatively they could have come into the room recognized that perhaps they were equipped for a great fancy dress party, when in actual fact most of the people there hadn’t really gone to much effort to dress up, forsaken their embarrassment and had an exciting night and perhaps even have been the center of the attention at the party.

So its here that we have the opportunity, in this moment, to experience the JOY or experience the fear in any given situation. In regards to embarrassment, your advantage is to turn the negative thoughts around in your head, to positive ones and use the situation to your advantage. Employing a mindset where you can enjoy that moment. The way to do that is to ask yourself “what’s funny about this situation that I haven’t noticed, or what can I take away from this experience?”.

It’s by employing a quality question that will change that possibly negative outcome into a positive one, something quite complete and fulfilling. Your Advantage.

Positive Affirmations: Positive affirmations are a great positive thinking technique that many business leaders and successful professionals use. By speaking and thinking positive thoughts you can regain your positive attitude.

Write a list of things that are important to you in life and then write a positive statement for each in the present tense. For example if have a sales job that you like you could say: ‘I am a great sales person with a top sales record’.

Now this tip is not something that you can master overnight unless you already have the power to control your thoughts. For this to work you have to regularly state your affirmations out loud.

Develop Your Own Personal Vision Statement: Everyone has goals in life, they just don’t necessarily write them down for whatever reason. Creating your own personal vision statement will help you focus on what is important to you in life. This will allow you to focus more time and energy on what is important as opposed to all the ‘noise’ of daily life. It helps to have an annual plan and a longer term plan so you can visualize where you want to be in a few years time. Imagine yourself living that life now and it will spur you on to achieve your sales targets.

Adopt an Abundance Mentality: Most people have limiting beliefs about opportunities in life and feel that there aren’t enough to go around. It is easy to say that something isn’t possible because there is too much competition in a certain area. Adopting an abundance mentality keeps your mind open to new opportunities that others may not see.

Write Down Your Key Achievements: Most of us have a resume so that is a good place to start when developing a list of your achievements. Compiling this list will remind you that you have achieved many things in life and will continue to do so with the right positive attitude.

Write Down Your Key Strengths: Similar to your achievement, write down what you are good at. If this feels uncomfortable then ask a positive friend or love one to help you out. You will be surprised what people say about you and you might find strengths that people see in you that you didn’t know you had.

Make decisions: One thing we are all guilty of is analyzing situations in too much detail and never making decisions. Try not to get lost in analysis. Successful people make decisions quickly and change them slowly as opposed to the other way around.

Don’t just be busy: Being busy does not win the race. It is important to have a strong work ethic in business and maintain your performance, however maintain your focus on daily action. Action will help you prepare for that sales meeting. This in turn will increase your sales motivation.

Motivation is What Gets You Started, Habit is What Keeps You Going

What is your purpose? During these challenging times it is a good opportunity to reflect and answer the BIG questions. This may sound “old school” to many however here are some “habits” to consider; hard work, preparation, taking care of those you love, self sacrifice, self discipline, religious faith and enjoy life.

The question, “What is your purpose?” often prompts the following, “be true to yourself” or “hold firm to your ideals”. Well, what if you can’t answer these questions?

Several years ago I spent time developing my personal “mission statement”. The result follows.

To make a contribution to the world by being a living example of; love, understanding, compassion, trust and wisdom. Starting first with my family I will help each develop the strength and courage to lead an independent and fulfilling life.

Seek first to understand, then be understood.

I will live by the values of integrity, compassion and self-discipline. I will strive to keep commitments not only to others but myself as well. I will not make excuses or blame others. I will keep my mind and body healthy and strong so that I am able to live my mission.

My mission is to be a force for positive change and to inspire others to greatness through being a catalyst for action and through developing a shared vision of that which is possible.

We make choices each day that influence our legacy. What can you do better? Are you spending your time the way you want?

Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”

On the wall behind my desk hangs a famous photo of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston, having just knocked him to the canvas; you may have seen the photo. Liston does not get up again, very few people remember Sonny Liston and quite frankly he was not much of a champ, more of a chump, however, Ali goes on to become one of the most famous champions of all time. In the years after the Liston fight Ali was beaten several times, what makes Ali the “GREATEST” is he got back up and fought again and again. My father, he was also a professional fighter, always told me it is not how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up.

A 29 year Yale study concluded that an optimistic attitude is more important to health than blood pressure, cholesterol level, smoking or obesity. It also found that with an optimistic attitude, you live on average 7.5 years longer. Optimism is not a goofy naïve, over dreaming perspective. It is choosing to be forward moving regardless of setbacks. It’s choosing to be free of unnecessary anxiety and frustration. It is accepting the fact of where you are, but never letting go of the mental perspective “I will prevail.” Get up off the canvas! The remarkable thing is that you have a choice every single day to manage it or let it be mismanaged.

Your Self Motivation May Be Lost on Your Beliefs

If you are new to my self-motivation articles, allow me a quick recap. The articles are based on my purchasing thousands and thousands of dollars worth of self help and self motivation material over the past 30 years. Yet with all the information I have acquired over the years I still have not received the endless abundance promised to me time and time again.

The sad part is I am not alone. The experts say 97% of the people who purchase self improvement materials never attain the goals they set for themselves. Thus the articles are a quest to find out why the terrible success rate. Is it the self help industries fault, our own lack of self motivation or maybe a combination of both?

Today’s article is about belief. I know you have heard it before “what the mind conceives and believes it will achieve”. Or Henry Ford’s “whether you think you are right or think you are wrong you are correct”. Yet I have done the positive thinking thing many, many times before and it has never yielded the awesome results promised. The question becomes why, is the law of attraction not real or am I doing it wrong. Well that’s a whole different story we will leave to a future article.

What I want to discuss is what you believe actually true. I think an example will help get my point across. Over the past 10 years I have owned three restaurants and presently a catering business. One made me a small fortune, one lost me a big fortune, and two did OK. 

Yet at the same time I have been trying to create a full time internet business. Because of this I never focused fully on my restaurants. My belief was sometime over the next two months my internet business of the month will start generating $ 10,000 a month so I don’t have to worry about building my restaurant business.

Well the reality was and is, I am not going to earn $ 10,000 a month from my internet adventures starting next month. I have 10 years hard data to prove this. Yet in my mind year after year I still acted as if these were a reality.

My point is to take a good look at your own beliefs and see which ones are true and which ones you just want to be true. If you have been telling yourself for five years next month I am going to get that promotion, yet it never happens maybe you need to take a look at why instead of just blindly believing next month is going to be different.

If you are like me and have spent 00’s of dollars on self help products, yet have not achieved the success promised in these products any new product recommendation is probably looked on with great skepticism. So I am not going to offer you any new products.

If you have ever been stuck in a rut you will value the benefits of being inspired. Sufficient inspiration will motivate you to take consistent action. Here is a way to use 5 days to gain inspiration:

Day 1. Take 1 hour to get clear on your main objective. You need to get clear on what you want to accomplish. It should be specific. Use the hour to get your thoughts and feelings written down on paper. Don’t worry about how you are going to get what you want. You will figure that out later.

Day 2. Make a list of the reasons why you want what you want. This is an important list. The items that you put on this list provide the foundation for your inspiration. Write down every reason that you can think of. The more the better.

Day 3. Set a goal. Based on the first two steps set a goal to get what you want. Set work habit goals. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals. When you have goals you have direction. This keeps you focused on your objective which motivates you to take action. You will become excited to take action because you expect to get what you want by hitting your goals.

Day 4. Create a plan for getting what you want. Layout a step by step plan. This keeps you on track. Having a plan also eliminates confusion. When you are clear about what needs to be done you are more enthused to do it.

Day 5. Get to work. Now that you have your inspiration, goal and plan you are ready to get started. Do not wait. Start from where you are. That alone will give a rush of excitement. You will feel better because you see movement. As you do the work according to your plan and goals you will gain a positive outlook on your future. You will feel inspired to take the necessary action to get what you want.
