In a painting of Carolina parakeets by American ornithologist John Audubon, the birds’ scarlet and chicken visages arise from a coil of emerald accoutrement and amber cocklebur branches. The painting is one of abounding artworks featured in the Princeton University Art Building exhibition, “Nature’s Nation: American Art and Environment,” that was acclimated to anatomy a Nov. 30 console altercation on the affiliation amid art and the environment. Hosted by the Princeton Anatomy Institute (PEI) and the art museum, the event, “Environmental Perspectives on ‘Nature’s Nation,’” featured four Princeton adroitness who drew on their analysis to allocution about anatomy capacity and issues adjoin the accomplishments of called works from the installation, which runs through Jan. 6. The adroitness batten to a full-capacity army in the art museum.

Princeton assistant David Wilcove (standing) laments the accident of the Carolina parakeet as he talks about a painting of the now-extinct bird by 18th-century naturalist Mark Catesby. The abundantly clinking birds now alone alarm out from paintings such as these as a austere attestation to the abundant breed and habitats always absent to the United States’ avaricious expansion.

“The annihilation of the parakeet was allotment of the abundant and abhorrent accident of wildlife that occurred throughout eastern North America at the aftermost division of the 19th aeon and into the alpha of the 20th century,” said Wilcove, whose assignment focuses on biodiversity and conservation.

“This is an era that saw the afterlife of the commuter pigeon, the abreast afterlife of the abundant bison herds, the dematerialization of alike animals we apperceive today to be accepted like the white-tailed deer, forth with amazing reductions in populations of shorebirds, waterfowl and herons as they were relentlessly bolter for their beef or their feathers,” he said.

“It was this aggressive corruption that ultimately led to the bearing of the abreast attention movement … and laws that ultimately put the brakes on the broad bartering annihilation of wildlife,” Wilcove said.

Science and art allotment a assurance on patterns, said Amilcare Porporato, the Thomas J. Wu ’94 Assistant of Civilian and Anatomy Engineering and assistant of civilian and anatomy engineering and the Princeton Anatomy Institute. Porporato advised the abundant curve in American artisan Alexandre Hogue’s “Crucified Land,” which depicts a Dust Bowl monocrop acreage laid decay by chasms of erosion. The acreage is broken by a black-shrouded cross.

The curve in Hogue’s painting mirror the blooming patterns Porporato studies as an ecohydrologist. “This is affectionate of accepted not alone for the way attributes works, but additionally artists abstract from patterns simple versions,” he said. “Scientists do the aforementioned — we alpha from absoluteness and again we accomplish caricatures with it. Patterns are absolutely acute for both science and art.”

Porporato compared the curve in American artisan Alexandre Hogue’s “Crucified Land” to the blooming patterns he studies as an ecohydrologist. “Patterns are absolutely acute for both science and art,” he said.

While science expands our ability of anatomy crises, art helps the abstracts bell emotionally, said Rob Nixon, the Thomas A. and Currie C. Barron Family Assistant in Humanities and the Ambiance and assistant of English and the Princeton Anatomy Institute.

“One of the things that draws me to the anatomy arts is the ability of art to accomplish all-embracing furnishings visceral, to accompany them aural the breadth of acquainted experience,” Nixon said. “Many of the best arduous anatomy crises and apropos of our time are abnormally large-scale, they’re actual adamantine to get abstract absorption on.”

Nixon focused on a photo in “Nature’s Nation” of an accountability body abounding with artificial debris, primarily canteen caps. Taken from the alternation “Midway: Message from the Gyre” by columnist and filmmaker Chris Jordan, the angel was captured on Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, which is a primary ancestry and nesting breadth for albatrosses.

The angel shows the bitter after-effects of the Abundant Pacific debris patch, a bouncing amplitude of artificial debris brought calm by assorted ocean currents that is estimated to be added than 600,000 aboveboard afar in admeasurement and accommodate added than 88,000 bags of plastic. Accountability parents aback beat up artificial clutter from the application and augment it to their chicks, which after die of aridity and malnutrition. With this photo, Jordan depicts the confusion of the patch, which is itself too ample — and its apparatus too baby and broadcast — to be apparent in its entirety, Nixon said.

“The accountable that his accurate alternation raises is the cachet of grief, what do we do with anatomy grief? I anticipate that we abstain casual through affliction at our peril,” Nixon said. He explained added during a altercation with the audience, “Rather than sidestepping grief, [Jordan] walks through it and gets to a abode of anniversary that additionally is a abode that acknowledges accident and tries to dramatize the amount of what we’re accident by emphasizing and acceptance us to see in new means what it is that we love.”

“In cogent a adventure about anatomy change, which the appearance does, we didn’t appetite it to be a absolutely beat experience. One of things that rescues it from that is the absurd adorableness of a lot of the assignment that is displayed, which is at already encouraging, and alarming to anticipate that we’re in a abode area a lot of that could go away,” Kusserow said.

“All is not lost, but I anticipate it’s fair to say that we are losing,” he said. “That is article we should all be actual anxious about and that, I can acquaint you, is absolutely the capital acumen I spent seven years of my activity putting this appearance together.”

George Philander, the Knox Taylor Assistant of Geosciences, Emeritus, acclimated the 1968 photo “Earthrise” taken by NASA Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders to altercate the all-important aggregate of science and humanism that acclamation altitude change requires. Philander, who refers to himself as an “optimistic environmentalist,” said that accepted discussions about altitude change await too heavily on austere data-driven scenarios.

The Meaning of Life – Happiness?

The Meaning of Life – Happiness?

Some say that the purpose of life is to seek happiness. Is happiness the purpose, or is happiness the result of another purpose? Is happiness the meaning of life, or is happiness the result of discovering what has heart and meaning for you? There is not one right answer to this question. The answer lies within each of us regarding what gives meaning to our life.

What Gives Meaning to Your Life?

Perhaps, in seeking happiness, we discover what has heart and meaning for us. Is this how it is for you? Or is it the other way around for you? Is happiness for you the result of loving yourself and others? Do you find that when you are open and loving, that you feel filled with happiness? Maybe love and happiness are inseparable. Maybe when we are happy, we are naturally loving, and maybe when we are loving, we experience happiness. If this is the case, then is the purpose of life is to seek happiness, or is the purpose of life to evolve in our ability to be loving and compassionate with ourselves and others? In my view, it is not important to separate out love and happiness. What is important is to discover what gives your life meaning. In my experience, meaning always has to do with love – with loving yourself and discovering how you want to share your love with others. When you discover this, you will likely be happy. Perhaps the meaning of life is to discover what has heart and meaning for you and, therefore, brings you happiness. The questions to ask yourself are:

What has heart and meaning for me?
What brings me joy?

Following Your Bliss

Gillian decided early in her life that what had heart and meaning for her was getting married and having children. She had decided that if she did not have children by the time she was 43, that life was not worth living. She started working with me when she was 42, unmarried, childless, and contemplating taking her life. In the course of her deep inner work, Gillian discovered another source of meaning in her life. She discovered that learning to be loving to herself – to the spark of God that she truly is – was extremely satisfying to her. As she practiced getting to know and love her true Self, she discovered another source of meaning – helping others. She realized that working in finance was not fulfilling to her and went back to school to become a chiropractor.

Gillian currently loves helping people attain excellent health. In addition, she adopted a 10-year old girl whose parents had been killed in an accident. She has found great joy and meaning in loving her adopted daughter.Gabriel consulted with me because he was depressed. He had become an attorney because that is what his father was, but found that he disliked it. It held no heart and meaning for him. In his soul, Gabriel knew that he was a writer. He decided to “follow his bliss”, as Joseph Campbell encouraged us to do. While Gabriel is currently not making nearly the money he made as an attorney, he is finding his happiness. By choosing to love himself and share his love through his creativity, he is finding his joy. Love, happiness, joy – perhaps they are all One. If you choose to pursue what has heart and meaning to you, you will likely find your joy.

Promise Rings Meaning – What Are Promise Rings?

Promise Rings Meaning – What Are Promise Rings?

Traditionally promise rings or couple’s rings referred to a promise of love made between a couple. But today there are different types of promises of love which people want an outward symbol for. The rings for these different types of promises are often collectively referred to as promise rings. Because of this, it is necessary to provide the different types or categories as a part of this definition.

The promise rings of today may be broken down into three major categories: pre-engagement rings, friendship rings and abstinence rings (also called chastity or purity rings). Each has its own significance and needs defining.

Pre-engagement rings are the traditional promise rings. These rings represent a promise of exclusivity and at least serious intentions for an engagement at a later date. This engagement could be postponed due to the age of the couple for a couple in high school or college, for financial reasons for couples who want but cannot afford a wedding or to allow a period of “real” time and exclusivity to allow the couple to get to know each other on a deeper level and decide if they really want to marry. The latter is very much an engagement but the giving of promise rings allows for a “pre-engagement” without the large outlay of cash that many spend on engagement rings.

Friendship rings are given to show love, appreciation and a commitment to remain friends long term. These rings are given to a best friend or best friends. But the friendship rings could also be given as an exchange of matching promise rings between best friends. Though these rings could be given at any point during the friendship, giving the friendship rings after the friendship has been tested and shown to be true and not merely a close association gives these promise rings more meaning.

Abstinence rings, like friendship rings, are not symbolic of romantic love but are outward symbols of a promise to remain abstinent or chaste until marriage. Today, however, abstinence rings (also called chastity or purity rings) may also be used to symbolize a promise to remain drug free. This promise may be a religious commitment to God, to self, to the wearer’s future, to the future spouse and/or to parents. Purity or Abstinence rings may represent a commitment to several people.

In summary, promise rings are symbolic of romantic love that goes beyond the sparks that fly when you see someone attractive, the love of a friend that goes beyond just enjoying hanging out together as friendship rings and a self love or obedient love that is willing to sacrifice to an extent the pleasures of the present for the hopes of the future as abstinence rings. Promise rings symbolize a commitment to love in a deeper more meaningful way.

Psychic Elizabeth Asks – Do You Really Know The Meaning Of The Word Faith?

Psychic Elizabeth Asks – Do You Really Know The Meaning Of The Word Faith?

Do you know the meaning of the word faith? What does the word faith mean to you and in your experiences? Today’s Daily Quote is from John Dewey, the American philosopher. His birthday is today, October 20th. One interesting fact about Mr. Dewey is that he was a major influence in education reform in the United States. He believed that nature, art, logic, questioning, ethics and democracy were important things for children to learn. He taught high school for two years and then decided to go back to school himself. He got his PhD and became a college professor. He founded The New School in New York City which was the first progressive school of it’s kind. As I’m sure you can imagine, he was considered a dangerous radical by many. Mr. Dewey said the following:

To me faith means not worrying.

I could not agree more! To me, the meaning of the word faith is exactly as John Dewey states it in our daily quote. Faith means not worrying. Period. If we are worried, we obviously do not have faith. If we keep going back and making sure, asking questions, etc., we obviously do not have faith. For example, if we tell our children that we have faith in them and trust them when they go out and then call them every 30 minutes to “check up on them”, that teaches them that we actually do not believe in their ability to choose wisely. It shows them our lack of faith in them. If we tell our lover that we trust them, and then riffle through their pockets, wallets or purses, we obviously do not have faith in them.

For today, let’s think of what the meaning of the word faith is in our own minds, hearts and lives. Let’s actually put our faith in someone today. You can choose yourself if you want. Putting our faith in ourselves first is necessary before we can trust anyone else actually. You can choose your partner, your child, your co-worker, your friend or anyone else. For us to learn the meaning of the word faith on a practical level, we have to actually allow someone the freedom to prove themselves to us. We all will, more than likely, have an experience today where we can choose to worry or to ask for a higher power to step on something. I don’t know of one day passing where faith is not required. The meaning of the word faith, according to John Dewey, is not worrying. Turn one worry over to the Universe today by saying out loud, “Please take this worry from me. Please give me faith.”. You don’t have to believe in any religion, God or being. You just have to say the words out loud. Watch what happens. We are all going to see the meaning of the word faith in our own lives today! Say “YES” to faith.
