New PC Dusty & Broken Case Tab 03-08-2018

For a machine that is fairly new its a sight damm more dusty than I thought it would be.

The case tab got broken off the top of the case. This is the second tabe to be broken from the top of the case. Front of the case is only thing holding it doen. For such a expensive case its made of brittle crap plastic. The old 10yr Medion PC had at least a good steel case not a fan of BE QUITE Cases as they are nowhere as silent as claimed and too expensive.

The heatsink contacts

The heatsink contacts

Thermal paste will need to be reapplied. I have read that thermal paste has a limited life, 3 – 4 years and this laptop is almost 4 years old now. I ordered some arctic silver 5 and am waiting on it.

Looks like the people at apple had applied far too much thermal paste here.

The macbook pro Motherboard: processor and GPU side

I was experiencing some heat related issues on my mabook pro and I finally decided to open up the damn thing and thoroughly clean the heatsink and vents.

The heatsink is actually below the motherboard so to clean it I had to unplug all the cables and unscrew the motherboard to get to the heatsink

There is dust collected here as well. This needs to be cleaned up. I didn’t have compressed air at hand.

Gigantic 250mm fan! Moves a significant amount of air into the case while running pretty quiet and looking looking sexy with the red LEDs. I added a 12 inch extension cable so that I can remove the side panel and not have to detach the fan

I recently had to trim off 1/8 on an inch from all 4 screw mounts so that this fan doesn’t sit so deep into the case. I bought a Zalman 9900 Max CPU Cooler and a few test fittings revealed that the top of the cooler was in contact with the fan when the side panel was closed. Now the fan is still seated far enough away from the dust filter in front and the CPU cooler behind it.

Most current setup 10-3-11:
Antec SLK3700 BQE Case

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 CPU (2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

MSI X48C Platinum Mobo

Crucial DDR3-1066 RAM 2GB x4

Ultra 750w PSU

Zalman 9900 MAX CPU FAN

WD VelociRaptor 300GB HDD

WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD x2

XFX Radeon HD 5770 GPU

ASUS 24 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit (5.9 WEI)

Test Fit

Just made it! By the way, the fan is mounted ‘backwards’ in this photo just for a quick clearance test. I think I didn’t bring the bezel downstairs with me for the fitting.
