24mm ƒ 2 Nikkor AIs 7-17

24mm ƒ 2 Nikkor AIs 7-17

A Nikkor 24mm ƒ 2 AIs lens sits for a portrait between uses. I picked this one up in Hong Kong, so it probably wouldn’t have had the USA warranty (long expired, in any case…) Taken in my home "studio" in Albany CA by a Nikon F3HP with a Micro-Nikkor 105mm ƒ 2.8 AF-D (NOT the AF-S!) lens on Fujicolor Pro 400H film.

Scanned into computer by my Epson V700 scanner with the Epson software running, then thoroughly dust spotted in Pain Shop Pro x8.

Yes a 24mm ƒ 2.8 would have been less expensive, (and lighter…) but I do a fair amount of wide-angle photography (without flash) inside sometimes dimly-lit churches… (Gothic cathedrals, for example…)

Wild Turkeys in Albany?

Wild Turkeys in Albany?

On December 27, 2011 these Wild Turkey Meleagris gallopavo intermedia hens were seen in my neighbor’s backyard on the 1000 block of Kains Avenue in Albany, CA. Turkeys, possibly these same individuals, have subsequently been seen on rooftops on the same block… on Jan 30, 2012 (the date this was posted) several toms and a whole flock of hens (maybe including these two…) were seen on the block… Taken by a Nikon N75 with a Promaster 7 100-400mm lens (at 400) on Fujicolor Superia Xtra 800. Camera’s on-board flash fired. (How much good that did at this range [~50 feet] is debatable…) Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010. Dust removal, gamma and color correction done in Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. This is a full-negative scan…

Note that these birds are fully capable of being eaten, but the problem is catching ’em – shooting with a gun is out of the question in this densely populated (…by people…) area! (bow and arrow is a possibility…)

Please note that these two are the Rio Grande subspecies M. g. intermedia, common through the Great Plains of the USA – that was the sub-species introduced into California. (The subspecies is distinguished by much longer legs than any other Meleagris gallopavo subspecies…)

plane BM 3-20-13

A small airplane flies over Ceaser Chavez Park in Berkeley, CA Taken by a Nikon F4s with a Promaster 7 100-400 lens (at 400) on Fujicolor Superia 400. Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010, dust reduction done in Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. Cropped severely to square.

Line below plane is either a scratch in the negative or a artifact of the scanner (It runs through several of my negatives, always the 4th or 5th negative of a stick of 6…)

AAD021A – Pakon F235 First Scan Sample

AAD021A - Pakon F235 First Scan Sample

Yea !!!! After a long weekend of troubleshooting my computer, and much frustration, I finally got my new Pakon F-235 Plus scanner working !!!! The key fix was installing a USB 2.0 PCI board on my computer, even though I already had USB 2.0 ports on the motherboard. Apparently, they have changed the USB chipsets ever so slightly since 2006 or so, and older devices may have trouble using the new chipsets. Solution: get a backwards compatible USB 2.0 PCI board.
This thing Rocks compared to my other scanners. MUCH faster, with good colors, and little fuss. Just feed in the negatives and away it goes. Took about a minute to scan 4 frames at 6MP resolution with ICE infrared dust removal enabled. Here is a sample from my first run. No preview scans needed, no option setting, no cropping, nothing but fast and effortless scanning! After the scan is completed, you can preview and edit any images as you desire. This image is what I got direct from the scanner, with no tweaks or adjustments. Finally, film scanning as quick and easy as digital ! And in particular, Negative Film scanning that is quick and simple, without needing to play around trying to get the colors right.

AAD021A = 4th strip inserted (D, 4th letter of alphabet), negative frame 21A. All auto saved in the Roll 001 Folder on my hard drive.

Camera = Olympus XA
Film=Fujicolor 100 negative
