Juniper in Soft Focus

Juniper in Soft Focus

Went out in the snow today to take some shots. Wound up at the Sibley Nature Center. This is a shot of some juniper berries on a tree next to the visitor’s center. Used a soft focus on this one, no flash. I thought at first I’d caught some snowflakes in this shot, too, but after wiping off my computer screen… *sigh*

It was just some dust.

Mountain, Sky & Moon

Mountain, Sky & Moon

I uploaded this in February ’07 after taking it in December ’06 because, when I took it, it had so many spots from sensor dust and I didn’t have the patience to blot out all the spots in postprocessing. I doubled my system memory from 1 GB to 2 GB RAM, though, and decided to use my computer’s increased responsiveness to fix this beautiful photo and post it, finally, on Flickr.

Dustbowl, The Purple Moon – Wallpaper

Dustbowl, The Purple Moon - Wallpaper

Wallpaper made from several source elements including a Dust Bowl era photograph found in government archives.

From my website: www.abcdeology.com/?p=120

Watching a clip from absurdist space western/musical The American Astronaut I thought about alien landscapes and black and white antique photographs, and I was reminded of the amazing pictures taken of the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl being when the prairie lands were farmed to death and the skies over the heartland of America turned black, swallowing a whole generation in the dust storms.

Somehow that led to me deciding to muck around in photoshop and make this based on the alienating landscape of the Dust Bowl.

A Generator and Dust

A Generator and Dust

The morning after the horrendous thunderstorm at Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley. We heard a number of generators running (we had no power ourselves). This one was outside the registration office. It didn’t produce enough juice for them to get their computers going, though. They made a note that we were leaving and that half a tree had fallen on our cabin — but the note was handwritten and our bill was left settled.

The air got dusty whenever any kind of vehicle went by. The mud from the flood dried to a fine powder that was easily raised — and then hung in the air and spread all around. I’ve seen floods after hurricanes where everything touched by the water showed some kind of mark. After this storm everything looked covered with powder.
