iMac G5 Capacitor Problem

iMac G5 Capacitor Problem

Looks like my iMac G5 will require a little more work soon. Took the cover off to blow out dust, now that it’s daily commute to work is done and I’ve got more leaking capacitors. So far they don’t appear to have an affect on the operation of the computer, so I won’t repair them until something is actually broken. Soldering on the motherboard is always a risky move, so I don’t want to replace these 7 capacitors until they stop the computer. I still run this computer all day long, every day, and until about 4 weeks ago, it was commuting back and forth to work every day. Takes a beating and keeps on ticking.

The picture of the original blown capacitors is here

My PC died. It’s a long, sad story, but never mind, because I should have a new one in a few days… and how often can I do this? 🙂

2008 March 28 – the other side of the old Dell P3 power supply. I have this feeling that I’m going to regret breaking it open, but it /has/ been sitting around for months. (Rats, wonder if the capacitors are bad because of non-use.)

Oh well, at least there’s less chance of shocking myself because it /has/ been sitting around. If it stops raining tomorrow, I’ll take it outside and wipe/shake/compressed air all the dust off. The enclosure itself still looks good, just a bit rusty around the cut edges, mostly the fan window. Nothing some sanding and spray painting can’t fix. 😛

Ghost in the Machine

Ghost in the Machine

"Men have become the tools of their tools."
–Henry David Thoreau

I have a pile of old electronic parts sitting in a box in my office – old RAM sticks, failed hard drives, broken headphones, parts of things long forgotten and more. As when I was a kid, they are all saved with the thought that someday I’ll fix it or make something of it. The thing is, I never do make anything. The menagerie of misfit electronic parts just continues to gather dust in the corner. Maybe someday the mass will reach a critical mass and make something of itself. Perhpas then, it will be us humans in the corner…

A view along the 2nd keyboard connector, and the resistors next to it. I removed the dust ball (on the left) after I took this image. I thought it looked cool.

Bad Caps

Bad Caps. Bad.

I found this photo being linked to as an example of what bad caps look like:

Pretty cool, it’s educational!
