pizza box computing

Went to a yardsale. Went to nine yard sales. Noticed one had some 1gb memory sticks. Woman offered me three bags of computer stuff for $1 (one skin, a single bone) if I taught her 8 year old son what a gigabyte is. Gave the speech how I learned it when I was twice his age — a byte is a character, a kilobyte is half a page, a megabyte is a dictionary, a gigabyte is an encyclopedia, a terabyte is a library — and the woman understood. The son continued thinking about other things. Hauled the bag of pieces home. Used canned air to get lint out of fans and dust off a mainboard, assembled a machine on a parkbench (and happily had a power switch in my box of junk). Sucker works — it’s a dual-processor 2.8ghz Gateway, though initially wouldn’t fire up because it seems the second RAM slot is wonked — put a stick in, the machine won’t boot — but this mobo can handle 8gb total and came with two 2gb sticks, so if ever I feel the need I can obtain one 4gb stick though I’d barely notice the difference. Anyhow, yeah, you see a card reader and a DVD-RW DL from the bag as well. No hard drive, I lack SATA hard drives, so this was booted off a Linux USB thumbdrive.
