Dusting off an algorithm I wrote a few years ago which fits circles into an image, based on best-fit and largest-first. Have a look at the large size image! 🙂

Source image is a public domain NASA photo of the space shuttle Atlantis: mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/detail.cfm?mediaid=44304
The software runs on a single CPU. For the above image, the maximum side was 1500 pixels wide, and the circle packing was computed in about 3 minutes. Output size was 3000 pixels on the largest size.
